WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the House prepares to debate the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), Log Cabin Republicans calls upon members of our party in the House of Representatives to vote in favor of the Senate version of the bill, which features LGBT-inclusive language and has already passed the Senate with strong Republican support.
“Today, many Republicans are taking a stand for a more modern and inclusive GOP. Our leaders in Congress should be wary of leaving the LGBT community out of legislation that is intended to protect all Americans from domestic violence,” said Gregory T. Angelo, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director. “Members of law enforcement who deal daily with violence and abuse have specifically recommended that LGBT Americans be included in the law. Passing VAWA without LGBT inclusion would send voters the wrong message about our priorities and what we stand for as a party.””This is an issue of protection under the law,” said Angelo. “Including LGBT provisions merely codifies equal protection and clarifies an area in which there was confusion regarding the application of prior versions of VAWA to LGBT individuals. The Republican Party must continue to be the party of equal rights for all Americans. Twenty-three Republicans in the Senate have already voted in favor of making VAWA LGBT-inclusive. House Republicans should do the same.”
